Ottawa Tulip Festival + On-the-Go Snacks

This past weekend brought such beautiful weather, the only thing on my to-do list for Victoria Day was to enjoy some time outside. The one thing I miss about going home for summer is being able to lay outside and enjoy the sunshine whenever I want to (my new apartment doesn't even have a balcony!). So, my boyfriend and I packed ourselves some books, snacks and a blanket and headed to Dow's Lake for the day.

Dressing for the spring weather is my favourite because I don't have to worry about bringing a jacket or being too cold (or too hot). Hands down, my favourite go-to outfit for this time of year is my favourite jeans paired with a girly top, and some sandals. My favourite jeans lately have been a pair of slightly distressed ones I found at Zara for less than 50$. They are so comfortable, yet they look great - I even wear them to work most days! My peach tank is perfect for a casual day at the park, it is simple yet the ruffled sleeves add the perfect touch of my personality.

I call the sandals I'm wearing my "walking" shoes, they are so comfortable, and stylish plus they give me a little bit of height. Those of you who know me know I would not be caught dead in flats or running shoes (I'm a heels gal until I die), so these - thought not chiropractor approved - are great for me on days when I know I will be doing a lot of walking or standing.

Now, for those of you who couldn't care less about my outfit and are looking for the "food" portion of this post here you go...

Eating on the go, and finding good "purse snacks" can be hard with my dietary restrictions. A lot of typical snacks contain grains. In the past, I'd have simply packed some peanut butter sandwiches, granola bars and apples and went on my way... but its not that easy being grain-free.

One of my favourite light snacks, especially for my purse are Fruit Source bars. I always have some in  my bag, but you can also easily make them at home. I recently made a "gummy bear" recipe from Kristin Cavallari's cookbook True Roots (pictured below) and they taste very similar to my typical bars! The gummies are also boyfriend approved - I keep some on hand in the fridge for easy snacking. The only ingredients you need are raspberries, orange juice and gelatine.

Some other easy snacks are fruit - I love berries, but bananas and apples are easy to grab and go - also nuts. The only kind of nuts/seeds that I am not allergic to are peanuts, so that is my go-to but you could get any kind or a trail mix if you don't have any nut allergies.

If you love salty snacks like me (but can't have chips or popcorn, also like me), you have got to try some salted plantain chips! They are hands down my favourite salty snack or treat, they really taste like potato chips. If you are more of a sweet person, regular banana chips are also favourites of mine, especially when dipped in peanut butter.

So there you have a to-date list of some of may favourite easy, on-the-go snacks that are diet approved. I hope this gave some new ideas for snacks for some of you! To close out, here are a few more pics from my Victoria Day... I hope you enjoyed my spring outfit idea as well as plan on trying out some of the healthy snacks for your spring and summer day trips!
